The likes of God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Marvel's Spider-Man are just a handful, and they're all brilliant. When you widen the view to include third party publishers and indie titles, there are far too many to name; Red Dead Redemption 2, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Yakuza 0, and Resident Evil 2 are some that spring to mind. 50. Ratchet & Clank (PS4)
This reimagining of the very first game in the series was made to accompany the movie, but ended up totally eclipsing it. Blending a familiar adventure with some new weapons and gadgets, Ratchet & Clank is both nostalgic and fresh. It's a visual treat, with exquisite animation and fun shooting/platforming gameplay. This is one gorgeous adventure that both fans and newcomers will adore.
49. Hitman 2 (PS4)
Following on from the brilliant episodic reboot, Hitman 2 releases as a complete game, and it's no less inventive, playful, and endlessly replayable. It introduces yet more imaginative sandbox environments in which to kill targets as Agent 47, and gives you all kinds of toys and gadgets to tackle each mission in countless ways.
48. DOOM (PS4)
One of the FPS originals, id Software resurrected DOOM with spectacular results. An irreverent story-telling approach and genuinely innovative arcade action makes for one of the most gratifying experiences on the PS4, and while the multiplayer mode is a bit of a stinker, the slick campaign with stunningly old-school level design makes this a standout shooter.

Flashy character action doesn’t get much better than Devil May Cry 5, a white-knuckle affair with style in spades and one of the deepest combat systems you’re likely to find on PS4. This Capcom tour-de-force looks absolutely sensational, and is packed to bursting with memorable moments – but it’s that graded combo-based gameplay that will keep you gripped long after you reach the credits.
46. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4)
Determining how highly regarded Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is really depends on what type of person you ask. Open world fanatics rightfully claim it's one of the genre's best, with vast stretches of land that let you come up with infiltration and escape plans. However, MGS enthusiasts aren't so hot on the fifth mainline entry thanks to a story that feels half-finished. It's an excellent playing game, but a disappointing Metal Gear Solid.
45. Journey (PS4)
There's nothing quite like Journey. A game that everyone should experience at least once, thegamecompany's emotional tale is shockingly cohesive, and is destined to provoke a different response from everyone that plays it. Its simplicity is its real strength, and it's a perfect example of how several brilliant ideas can fuse to form an uncompromising, definitive whole. Flawless visual and audio work help make the release feel effortlessly elegant, while its accessible controls mean that anyone can enjoy it.
44. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II (PS4)
The Erebonian Empire finds itself divided by civil war, and the spirited Class VII is stuck right in the middle. As direct as a sequel can possibly be, Trails of Cold Steel II takes place almost immediately after the events of the first game, with troubled protagonist Rean Schwarzer separated from his dear friends. On a quest to regroup and find their place in a war-torn nation, Class VII must journey across Erebonia, gathering allies and uncovering the truth, little by little. A grand JRPG, bolstered by expanded character progression and a beefy turn-based combat system.
43. Dark Souls Remastered (PS4)
Dark Souls has earned a rabid, loyal fanbase with its uniquely weighty combat, richly realised worlds, and challenging (but fair) gameplay. Lordran is beautifully realised on PS4, its foreboding architecture and often terrifying denizens forcing players to learn from trial and error. Dark Souls isn’t for everyone, but those that persevere will forever praise the Sun.
42. Inside (PS4)
Inside is 2D platforming perfection, but it’s the ending that we all remember it for. After two or so hours of impressive puzzle-solving and hints that something isn’t quite right, the game goes off the rails with a 20-minute sequence that is perhaps one of the most memorable of the PS4 generation. An incredible game that has cemented Playdead’s position among the gaming greats.
41. Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition (PS4)
At first glance it's easy to pin down Hollow Knight as just another 2D metroidvania that boasts a steep challenge, but it's much more than that. There's a fantastic sense of wonder to Hollow Knight — everything that you see and do in this meticulously crafted title is brilliantly contextualised, resulting in an adventure that oozes charm, character, and memorable moments.
