Update: Well, we suppose this is Sony in 2023, folks! Several hours after publishing a PS Blog post with gameplay details, the platform holder has now followed it up with a Helldivers 2 trailer. Why they couldn’t release together is a mystery!
Anyway, this game looks good – real good. It’s got that chaotic third-person co-op flavour to it, and Arrowhead has seriously upped the production values – this is stunning stuff! The game’s due out later this year, and is shaping up to be one to keep an eye on – especially if you like tactical shooters that require team-based coordination.
Original Article: Outside of the highly anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the upcoming Helldivers sequel is one of the few PS5 console exclusives from Sony on the horizon. And today community manager Katherine Baskin has ordered a tactical supply drop on the PS Blog, digging into a few more co-op and combat focused details pertaining to the 2023 release.
Baskin explains: “Creating your loadout feels like part of the mission prep; changing your weapon to suit not only your appetite for destruction but the mission and enemy types you might encounter. Your greatest aids as a Helldiver are stratagems: powerful tools that can be summoned with short button combinations. Everything from airstrikes to Hellpods containing bigger, badder weapons to defensive gear and extra supplies are at your fingertips.”
Developer Arrowhead is emphasising co-operation, so the stratagems you select will need to be carefully coordinated in order to complement each other and ensure success in the field. “While one Helldiver is handling the heavy fire, another Helldiver can call down a shield generator to protect teammates as the enemies push back,” Baskin says. “In a four-person team, you’ll be able to select a mix of stratagems and weapons that will lead to a unique victory every time.”
It sounds like the developer wants you to find your own personal playstyle, whether it’s an all-out guns blazing approach or a more reserved sniping from distance tactic. Regardless of strategy, you’ll need to have your squad’s back at all times: “It’s your team’s priority to use a Reinforce stratagem [when a teammate dies] to call your brand new Helldiver down to the planet to pick up right where you left off. You can even grab the guns your previous corpse left behind.”
This is shaping up to be a much denser version of the original, which was a very popular game on PS4, PS3, and even PS Vita. The sequel’s been a long time coming, but we’re fairly confident it’s going to deliver – and then some!

Cross play with pc? Hell yeah!
How about a nice cup of liber-tea?!
Helldivers was awesome, got high hopes for this one
Taste Democracy!
You tease and torture us with this short clip.🤣 Upload a full mission ASAP lol. There's going to be so much fun to be had in this game going by the first one.
Getting Returnal vibes from the visuals.
Hoping this launches on plus.
I must admit, of all the GaaS, this was perhaps the one that stood out most to me but not enough that I'm looking forward to its release and eager to play it...
It appealed more than Marathon, FairGame$ etc to me but I am not really looking for or interested in more 'GaaS'.
I remember the original being a top down/isometric if I recall correctly? And I also remember it being insanely hard?
So the game is no longer isometric? Hmmmm. Still kinda excited to play. Didn't know it was going to pc. Did the first one ever go to any other platform?
Updated with trailer!
@BAMozzy @BAMozzy to be fair, this is a sequel, we know what to expect. It's hard to get excited about the others as I have not seen any game play.
@Cutmastavictory Yeah, it was also on PC!
Trailer is awesome. Yep, they kept the hilarious(helldive on your head) stuff intact lol.
Kinda reminds me of Lost Planet 2 a bit. I'll keep an eyeball on it.
Ooooh serious outriders vibe with this one..enjoyed the first game and i really liked outriders. Count me in 👍
Always wanted a Starship Troopers game 😂
Seriously though looks like a lot of fun.
Outriders vibes, to my wishlist!
@Cutmastavictory A sequel but also seems quite a departure from the original in terms of Game-play. If you played the original, you may have some idea of what's going on, but its still quite different from the top down shooter of the Original.
Whilst the rest may not of had much (if anything) on the Game-play side, It doesn't change the fact that I am not really interested in playing 'online' only Games as a Service. I don't want a Splatoon knock-off, another Extraction shooter or another 'Heist' multiplayer either.
There are a 'lot' of options - quite a few 'free to play' too. It will be interesting to see how well these do, but from my perspective, I'd rather spend my gaming time in Single Player games and maybe dipping in to Online games/modes in games I have or can get 'free'. Warzone for example has BR and Extraction modes and F2P.
Each to their own - but of the games that were revealed by Sony, the one that stood out most to me was 'Helldivers 2' - some of that was the 'change' in Style/Game-play which appeals 'more' than the top-down perspective of the Original. The rest didn't appeal at all - mostly because I don't want more GaaS, more Online Shooters etc...
@BAMozzy I have played the original. You not being interested in something where you saw no actual game play is completely different from...nvm. I think you're doing that thing where your mind is set in stone on what ever point you're making. And for the record.... there's not many heist games on the market.
Wow this looks really good gameplay wise and also graphically! I’m sold take my money
Does this count as one of the live service games?
@Cutmastavictory I can only think of the Payday games but the way people talked about Fairgame$ you'd think there hundreds of them.
@UltimateOtaku91 funny enough I just found out there is a Starship Troopers game on PC. But this will def be my fix for PS5!
@ErrantRob
Helldivers was the first Starship Troopers game we deserved lol. I don't know who is making the new Starship game but at least you know Arrowhead is passionate about Helldivers and it's going to put a lot of soul in the game. (The only gaas from Sony we can be excited about lol)
Glad to see the Gatling sentry is still there. I have many fond memories of curling up in the fetal position next to one, waiting for the extraction ship (and praying that doesn’t land on my head all the while).
The transition to 3D had me a little sceptical at first, but this looks great.
So Sony expects their PS5 players to have to pay to play online while giving free access to PC players?
This won't end well.
@TrickyDicky99 that won't end well because it won't end lol.
It was the same for Helldivers 1. People on PS4 and vita paid to play online and pc players didn't. The game has a playerbase to this day and there isn't crossplay.
